Police Armouries
The Police Armouries Project resulted from resolutions made by the Chiefs at the 36th Annual PICP Conference held in Wellington, October 2007. The Secretariat was directed by the Chiefs to assess current armoury security to identify countries that required urgent assistance and to seek suitable donors to provide this support.
At the 36th PICP Conference in New Zealand, the Chiefs endorsed the following resolutions:
- Directing the PICP Secretariat to arrange an assessment of armoury security with a view to which countries most urgently need assistance; and
- Directing the PICP Secretariat to seek suitable donor assistance for countries to bring defective armouries up to an acceptable standard of security.
The assessment was conducted via a questionnaire emailed to each member country and was reliant on the responsiveness of member countries. No funding was allocated to this project. A total of fourteen member countries responded to the questionnaire between February and July 2008.
A number of countries in the Pacific have or are already receiving assistance in relation to their armouries from donor countries. As a result of the returned questionnaires, six (6) countries have been identified as requesting assistance that fits within the scope of the project.
