Cyber Safety Pasifika

Internet use is growing hugely in the Pacific Island countries; for instance, the proportion of households with Internet access at home doubled between 2006 and 2010 in both Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

This offers huge social and economic opportunities, but also presents great risks. Whilst PICs are increasingly teaching basic ICT skills in schools, very little attention is currently given to cyber safety. The Pacific is therefore increasingly vulnerable to a range of issues including cyber crime, cyber bullying, online sex offences, and cyber predators.

Cyber Safety Pasifika has been developed to address these emerging issues, by improving education around cyber safety, improving the capability of police to deal with cyber crime, and strengthening government policies and legislative frameworks.
